INTERNING at Kadwood Atelier: Turning Fashion College Skills Into Industry Experience

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT TAYA HANSON

When I was offered an internship at Kadwood Atelier, I didn’t know what the future had in store for me. Now 4 months later, I wouldn’t go back and change a single thing. Working with Erin Kadwood has been such an extraordinary experience.

The world of Kadwood is draped with shades of crimson and pink, patterns ranging from tartan to houndstooth, and conversations with high profile clientele becoming part of everyday life. From day one, the internship was hands on and I was given responsibility, and a chance to prove myself by creating marketing emails, posting content, sewing, and managing data across client contact spreadsheets. I put into practice all of the skills that I was taught in class at NFC, which allowed me to complete my tasks with confidence and professionalism.

NFC has been integral in growing my understanding of fashion and the fashion industry, and at Kadwood I have been able to apply that knowledge in a real world environment. Seeing the connection between what I learnt in the classroom and how it is used within a working atelier has been incredibly rewarding.

Kadwood’s “Size YOU” philosophy is not just about the fit of a suit, but reflects a holistic view of their clients. Every detail is considered, a client’s colours, Kibbe body type, proportions, patterns and even their lifestyle. This way of thinking has influenced me beyond fashion. It has taught me the importance of creating things that truly work for the individual rather than simply following trends.

What my experience at Kadwood has taught me is to make the most of every single opportunity, no matter how big or small. You never know the impact a single experience can have on your life. Through this internship, I have not only gained valuable practical skills, but I have also found a warm and welcoming environment to learn in. Erin has generously shared her knowledge of sewing, business, creativity and life — learning alongside her has been one of the most meaningful parts of this journey.

Back in March when I accepted this internship, I could never have imagined where it would lead me. Walking into my first day was nerve wracking, but looking back I am incredibly grateful that I accepted the opportunity. Over the past four months, Kadwood Atelier has become so much more than an internship, it has been a place of learning, creativity, confidence, and personal growth!
