Learning on Set: What I Gained from Assisting on BAYSE’s Fashion Campaigns

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT MADISON MAMO

I had two great opportunities to assist on the Bayse brand Summer Campaign shoot and the eCommerce shoot for their Autumn/Winter collection; these were my first photoshoots, so going in I had no expectations. I was just excited to be in the environment especially because I am a huge fan of the brand.

On both shoots the teams were very warm and welcoming, making myself and my classmate feel apart of the team. The Summer Campaign was shot at a beautiful house which reminded me of a villa in Bali; very fitting for the summer campaign. The eCommerce shoot was shot at a professional studio, with a little more formality to the day. Both experiences were great and I enjoyed both equally, and it was great to see the differences between a Campaign and eCommerce shoot. On both days, my classmate and I had the role of steaming the garments and keeping the space tidy.

Overall, I was able to learn from the professionals on the Bayse team and felt satisfied that my small role helped to contribute to both the collections. One thing I learnt from both shoots is the importance of everybody on set being on the same page regarding plans and expectations. At the beginning of each day we were informed of the order the garments would be shot in, making it easier for everyone on set. My highlight would definitely be observing Elliot Garnaut styling the eCommerce shoot; not only was he lovely and warm but he knew exactly how to work with the team and as always did an amazing job with styling! I learnt a lot from watching him throughout the day and am grateful I had the opportunity to do so.

I am excited that so early on in my career journey I was able to work with one of my favourite brands, not once but twice in one month! I am looking forward to future opportunities and to learning something from every person I meet on set.
