How I Found My Creative Path at NFC: Non-Traditional Fashion Education That Actually Works
WORDS BY NFC STUDENT BEN MARQUARD
Hey my name is Ben, I am 26 and from Sydney. I am a creative person who loves to create art, make 3D designs and play video games. I have made jewellery designs, logos, models, virtual clothing and more. My true passion is creating something I can bring to the world with real-life application.
I was trying to figure out what the next best step for me was, keeping in mind I am entrepreneurial, creative and want to build my own business. I knew I needed to get busy and work, but also needed some structure, education and exposure. I stumbled across NFC by accident and immediately the course structure caught my eye. Ever since enrolling, the environment has been great. All staff are so helpful and really care to help sort out the best path for you as a student. My classmates have been wonderful.
Already a few weeks in, I have been exposed to two wonderful speakers at our Networking Events who have brought amazing real-world experience to share. Opportunities to work with brands are flying in left, right and centre. Some really cool days are coming up where I will get an inside look at the industry, which I’m excited for.
The college itself has beautiful facilities with couches, snacks, fridge, microwave and a great chill/study area. My teacher, Bianca, is very passionate, bringing a great wealth of knowledge to the classroom environment. I can't wait to see how the rest of the year goes.
Standard uni/college education has never worked for me — as cookie cutter read-and-write solutions to learning haven’t either. Of course, you cant avoid all learning like this as it can be helpful; knowing when it is best and for who is the key. This sweet spot for me is when theory compliments practical work. NFC seems to have nailed it.
Straight from Orientation, I can see that this college understands what the non-neurotypical minds need, which is something traditional education has failed again and again to do.
Our Orientation was a family environment with a sense of welcoming from the Founder to the newest students. We are all on different paths and in different positions but are also all people; this sense really provides the feeling of understanding. A brilliant display to see that they understand we are people and have differences, and how we can each excel.
I’m excited for the days to come and to see what happens!
