From the Gold Coast to Melbourne: A Fashion Student’s Journey Studying at NFC

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, OCEANA RITCHOT

When I first started my fashion journey with NFC, I never imagined just how much it would change me and pictured where I would be now — not just as a fashion student, but as a person. Moving from the Gold Coast to Melbourne has been one of the biggest leaps of my life and I want to share a little about what it’s really been like so far and the reality of an 18-year-old moving from the Gold Coast to Melbourne to gain experience in the fashion industry.

Starting Online - My journey at NFC was quite unique; at first, I began my studies online with the amazing Caytlan. Once a fortnight, I would fly in and out of Sydney on the same day to study on campus; being dyslexic, I’ve always found it a little tricky to stay completely engaged with online education, and found it much more beneficial for my needs to have access to a creative physical space in the classroom.

Making the Move - I’ve always had in the back of my mind that I’d love to live in Melbourne — as soon as i found out that NFC was opening a new campus in Victoria, I took it as a sign and started to plan “the big move!”

Leaving the Gold Coast wasn’t easy; the sun, beaches and the familiarity of home had always been my comfort zone but, the pull of Melbourne’s fashion scene and industry was too strong to ignore.

I still remember the mix of nerves and “what if’s” on my mind as I was booking in dates and packing my life into the car (way too many pairs of shoes and jackets by the way…) After the two-day drive, my first impression looking out at the CBD horizon left me feeling inspired, and slightly overwhelmed.

Campus & Community - Walking into NFC’s Melbourne campus for the first time was unforgettable! From the colours, to the quirky and unique decorations and fun couches, you can feel the creative buzz everywhere — It really is a vibe! Our College Director Bryce, was super warm and welcoming to everyone for their first class of the term. My classmates came with their own unique styles, which made me feel both challenged and supported.

Fashion Environment - Coming from the Gold Coast, where fashion often reflects a relaxed, beach-inspired lifestyle, Melbourne felt like stepping into another world of creativity. Here, people express themselves with confidence and individuality. I’ve noticed residents tend to love mixing vintage with high fashion and streetwear with couture. I’ve found so much inspiration just walking through the laneways or sitting in a café watching people pass by —I’ve definitely grown a new love for people-watching different styles in Melbourne!

Living in Melbourne has definitely influenced my fashion perspective. I’ve become braver with my style choices, more experimental with my looks and open to new ideas with colours and fabrics. Being surrounded by so many creative people pushes me to take risks and see fashion not just as clothing, but as a language.

Student Life & Networking - NFC has given me opportunities I never imagined, from meeting other students who share the same passion, to connecting with weekly guest speakers who work in the industry, and attending events that give me a glimpse of what the future could hold. I love that networking with NFC doesn’t feel forced; it’s a privilege to be able to connect with big names from the industry!

Looking back, my move from the Gold Coast to Melbourne wasn’t easy but was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! The past few months have been really character building and have allowed for self-growth within my career and personal life.

For anyone considering a similar path or wanting to enter the fashion industry, my advice is simple…. be brave and say yes!

Be open to new experiences and trust that the discomfort of change is what pushes us forward. Bring your passion, keep an open mind and let the city inspire you!
