Behind the Scenes of My First Fashion Assisting Experience at National Fashion College Sydney

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, EVA LUCAS

One of the things I have become most grateful for since starting at National Fashion College in Sydney is the incredible range of assisting opportunities offered to students. While learning in the classroom provides a strong foundation, being able to step into real industry environments and experience the process firsthand is something completely different. Each opportunity offers something new, allowing us to build practical skills, meet inspiring professionals, and gain a deeper understanding of how the fashion industry operates behind the scenes.

My very first assisting experience was with Silverfox MGMT, where I helped capture behind-the-scenes content during an open model shoot. As someone who had never been on a modelling set before, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect walking into the studio that morning. Working alongside the agency’s Head of Talent, Roxanne Watkins, I quickly realised that assisting roles are about so much more than simply helping out; they are an opportunity to learn, observe, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of a professional shoot. She had such a positive energy that it instantly set the tone for the day, and it made me feel like I was part of the team rather than just a student observing from the sidelines.

Stepping into the studio for the first time was a moment I won’t forget. I was genuinely fascinated by how much was happening all at once; lighting being adjusted, photographers directing poses, and models preparing for their shoots. My role throughout the day was to film short behind the scenes clips for each model’s session, capturing different angles, movements, and moments that reflected the atmosphere of the shoot. It required creativity, quick thinking, and attention to detail, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for how much work goes into producing a single photoshoot.

Having always been curious about the modelling world, seeing the process unfold from behind the camera was incredibly eye opening. Watching the collaboration between the creative team and the models showed me just how important communication, confidence, and teamwork are in bringing a vision to life.

What stood out to me even more, however, was learning about the values behind Silverfox MGMT as an agency. The brand represents models exclusively over the age of 30, celebrating individuality, natural beauty, and the confidence that comes with life experience. In an industry that often places such a strong focus on youth, it was refreshing and inspiring to see a brand that highlights the power and beauty of aging.

By the end of the day, I realised that this experience gave me far more than just my first assisting credit. It provided a genuine insight into the energy and collaboration that goes into a professional shoot, while also reinforcing how valuable these hands on opportunities are during my time at the National Fashion College. It was the perfect introduction to the industry and has made me even more excited for the many experiences still to come.
