My Fashion Internship at Manning Cartell: Real Industry Experience Through National Fashion College

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, EMMY GELARDI-BUNYI

Stepping into the design studio at Manning Cartell for the first time felt like walking into the heartbeat of Australian fashion. As part of my course at the National Fashion College, I had the opportunity to intern with a well respected womenswear label in their design team. This experience shaped me far more deeply than I expected, both creatively and personally.

My college always emphasised preparing us for the fashion industry, but this internship is where everything truly clicked. I got to experience the full pipeline: initial concepts, material decisions, design development, fittings, production considerations and more. It taught me how many hands and minds shape each collection, and how much passion goes into every detail.

More than just skills, Manning Cartell gave me confidence. I left with a clearer sense of my design identity, a deeper love for the craft and an appreciation for the hard work that stands behind luxury fashion brands.

This internship reminded me why I chose this industry; because fashion is storytelling, problem-solving, emotion, and innovation all woven together. And being able to experience that within a brand like Manning Cartell was truly unforgettable.

I’m incredibly grateful to the National Fashion College for creating opportunities like this and for working so hard to match each student with placements that truly suit their skills and passions. The support, guidance, and industry connections they provide have made this experience not only possible but unforgettable.

I’ve loved every moment of my internship — the learning, the challenges and the chance to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring team — and I know the lessons I’ve taken from it will stay with me as I continue my journey in fashion.
