Gold Coast Swim Week Backstage: How Volunteering Builds Fashion Industry Experience

WORDS BY NFC STUDENT, ZAHLI WIENCKE

Season 3 of Gold Coast Swim Week wrapped up in unforgettable style — with its final event held on board the incredible YOT Club. The venue itself made the experience feel more like a party than a production, and being part of the backstage crew meant I got to experience both the rush and the celebration of the event.

The vibe? All-white everything. This theme gave everyone a chance to show off their own creative twist, both in front of and behind the runway. It felt like a celebration of individuality and unity all at once.

Working alongside producers Jazmine Jenner and Georgia Phillips was such a highlight — you couldn’t ask for a more supportive and down-to-earth team. As a volunteer, I helped with everything from garment steaming and fittings to dressing models and assisting the Head Stylist. It was fast paced, but everyone pitched in to keep things running smoothly.

The show featured designs from Amy Designs, who creates handcrafted womenswear and childrenswear. Her pieces made the models look like they’d stepped straight out of a Victoria’s Secret dream; dramatic, feminine, and full of movement. It was a beautiful reminder that fashion is meant to be lived in.

With stylists, PR, media, and marketing all buzzing around backstage, it was the perfect environment to make connections and build confidence in the industry. More than just a runway show, it was a hands-on way to grow my confidence and connections in fashion. It was the kind of experience that makes you feel more sure of the path you’re on.
